Sun Simulacrums
Sun Simulacrums (2023) is a video performance art project featuring a nude performer holding a circular, sun-like object that reflects light projected onto them. The colors and tones of the light are derived from sunsets and scientific visualizations of global warming, showcasing rich hues of orange, pink, and yellow. The performer wears polarized glasses that also reflect the light and stands as if on a beach, positioned against the projected light. The reflective disk refereneces the ancestral obsidian mirrors used in Mesoamerican culture was associated with the idea that they served as portals to a realm that could be seen but not interacted with.
Sun Simulacrums is often performed in three staged movements, symbolizing the sun as seen from Earth. The project explores the relationship between human activity, climate change, and nature through performance.
